Dead Man’s Dog Returns Home
Friends of a trucker that died last week in an accident near Dallas have made a journey of over a thousand miles to bring home the canine companion of their friend.
Benny Gerlock, a truck driver, died last week after crashing his 18-wheeler on Interstate 35E south of downtown Dallas, but the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Holly, survived.
Joe Creighton and Russell Nordhoff wanted to do what Gerlock would have wanted for his dog. The two made a journey of over 1,470 miles, driving from Maryland to the Dallas Animal Shelter in order to bring Gerlock and Holly back.
Since the accident, many in the area, including the officer who pulled Holly from the wreck, have stepped forward offering the dog a new home. Benny’s friends, however, insist that Holly already has a home.
Holly is now headed back to Maryland in Gerlock’s pickup truck. For the dog it is something that is familiar and she will be staying with family.
Benny and Holly met seven years ago and friends say that the two were inseparable. Holly will also be present at Benny’s funeral in order to say a final goodbye.
The story is a bittersweet one. There is nothing like losing someone you love in the devastation of a fatal accident and little that can truly offer comfort to the friends and loved ones left behind.
