Rig Spills Utility Poles All Over Highway

Trucks and highway. International forwarding.Trucks carrying goods and highway

A big rig carrying utility poles spilled its load when it rear-ended another vehicle on Interstate 35 early Tuesday morning. According to officials, the accident happened around 2:00 a.m. near the Whitlock Lane intersection when the driver of the 18-wheeler rear ended another vehicle. The crash caused the big rig to hit the concrete embankment and overturn. Diesel fuel and the truck’s load of utility poles spilled out onto the freeway.

Authorities shut down the roadway in both directions in order to allow for cleanup. Three southbound lanes were re-opened just before 7:00 a.m. The driver of the car and the 18-wheeler were both taken to an area hospital and are listed as having minor injuries.

Accidents involving 18-wheel tractor trailers can be the cause of serious injuries or even death. National statistics show that each year thousands of motorists are either critically injured or killed in accidents involving big rigs. Many of the accidents involving 18-wheel tractor trailers are due to the negligent operation of drivers.

Causes of accidents involving 18 wheel tractor trailers can include reckless driving, improper driver training, mechanical failures, unsecured loads and the most common cause of the driver simply being overworked and facing driver fatigue. According to a survey conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board, some 20% of truck drivers admitted to falling asleep at the wheel at least once in the previous three months. Considering the number of trucks that are seen on the road on a daily basis, such numbers and the potential for accidents is a sobering thought.
