Speeding Vehicle Goes Airborne, Causes Utility Pole Collapse
Few things can be more terrifying than losing control of your vehicle when you’re behind the wheel. When such a situation happens along with a brush with serious injury or even death, it can make one feel extremely fortunate to be alive.
The CBS Local station in Dallas – Fort Worth recently reported on an accident that happened in Wilmer that was a very close call for one Wilmer Police officer.
Authorities say that the incident happened at approximately 5:00 a.m. when a speeding vehicle on 1-45 actually left the road and went airborne, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. The vehicle narrowly missed the police cruiser of 20-year police veteran, Sergeant Carl Laza, near the end of his shift.
Dashcam video shows the airborne vehicle that hit the ground and slid through the intersection into a utility pole, narrowly missing the police cruiser. Initially, Laza thought it had been a tornado that caused the incident.
The utility pole broke where the 2018 Audi struck it and fell on Laza’s police cruiser. Laza narrowly escaped being injured.
The driver of the Audi survived the crash and is reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
A spokesperson for the Wilmer Police Department, Sergeant William Jackson said in a statement that the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police have not said whether the driver of the Audi will be charged in the incident.
