Three Street Racing Incidents Last Night

With the emptier streets thanks to the lockdowns, speeders and racers are taking to the roads more often. Three incidents of street racing happened this weekend in Dallas according to the police. NBC reports.

The three incidents happened at:

  • A parking lot at Cole Avenue and Lemmon Avenue
  • A parking garage at Klyde Warren Park
  • I-35 and Royal Lane

The police say that racers were shutting down intersections by doing donuts in the middle of them, as well as conducting illegal races. This has been an ongoing problem for months.

Street races are dangerous to the drivers and to the public. First, the roads may not be able to handle high speed racing. Race tracks match the curves of the road with the type of cars they expect. It’s exciting without being too dangerous to drive.  Public roads are designed to a much lower speed limit.

Second, because the roads are public there could be any number of bystanders or other cars on the road that aren’t participating. The speed of a racer can catch a non-participant without warning and cause a fatal crash. If you watch professional street races like the Monaco Grand Prix, there are many safety barriers and officials to watch the track and to keep cars away from public areas.

Street racers should turn their energy toward racing on race tracks and slow down on public roads.
