Deputy Killed, Chief Of Police Injured Assisting Stranded Motorist

Earlier this month, a Falls County Sheriff’s deputy was struck and killed, and a chief of police has been left critically injured while they were assisting a stranded motorist along Texas 6, near Riesel.

CBS Local in Dallas-Fort Worth reports that Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Jones and Riesel Police Chief, Daniel Krumnow were assisting a stranded motorist when Mazda Sedan was traveling on the highway hydroplaned and slid into both law enforcement officers.

Department of Public Safety Sergeant Ryan Scaman issued a statement to reporters saying that Deputy Jones, 30, died at the scene of the crash.

Chief Krumnow was airlifted to a hospital in Waco with a ruptured spleen and nine broken ribs. He was later transferred to Scott and White Hospital in Temple, where he is now listed in stable condition.

The driver of the car that hit the two men was also injured in the accident. They were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to the website, Blue Lives Matter, Jones’ K-9 partner, Thor, was in the Falls County patrol vehicle and was not hurt in the crash. Thor has been placed in the home of Jones’ family.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the Mazda at this time.
