Five Teens Involved In Rollover Crash

Texas State Highway 130 has the highest posted speed limit in the country, allowing motorists to travel as fast as 85 miles per hour. State Highway 130 is also where five teens were involved in a fatal crash that happened in Georgetown, just south of State Highway 79.

The NBC affiliate station in Dallas-Fort Worth reported on a fatal crash that happened on the morning of Wednesday, June 12th in the southbound lanes of SH 130 when a 2006 Mazda traveling at a high rate of speed attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle. The driver of the slower vehicle moved over in order to let the Mazda pass.

The driver of the Mazda lost control of his vehicle when he made an evasive move. This caused the car to leave the highway and venture onto the median. The vehicle rolled a number of times before landing upside down in a creek.

Three of the five teens inside were ejected from the vehicle during the crash. A 16-year-old male from Garland whose name was not released was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He has undergone emergency surgery and is currently in ICU. Andrew Trevino, 17, of Dallas was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Jairo Garcia, 18, a resident of Garland, died at the scene.

Two additional teens were trapped inside the overturned vehicle and were extricated from the wreckage by emergency crews with the Georgetown Fire Department.

Authorities say that Dezirae Fregosa, 17, of Kaufman was driving at the time of the crash. Also inside was a 16-year-old girl from Quinlan. Her identity was not released. Both Fregosa and the girl were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for the Georgetown Police Department said that the rate of speed that the Mazda had been traveling at and the unsuccessful, fully-evasive by the driver were ultimately the cause of the fatal crash.
