Speeding Accident Leaves Two Cousins Dead

An accident has left two people dead when their vehicle hit a center guard wall on the southbound LBJ freeway early Friday morning.

The fatal crash happened between La Prada and Oates Drives in Mesquite at approximately 12:30 a.m. when Dallas Police say that a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis traveling at a high speed may have ridden the wall before being torn in two.

The accident victims died at the scene of the crash. They are identified as cousins, 26-year-old Raymondrick Scott and 24-year-old Cordell Scott.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Authorities state that the cause of the crash is still being investigated. It is still unknown if alcohol or other substances may have been a factor in the accident.

Every year, millions of people are injured in the United States due to motor vehicle traffic crashes – and out of those millions of accidents, over one third were directly related to drivers travelling at high speeds.

Driving at a high rate of speed will not only reduce the amount of reaction time that a driver has to react in avoiding an accident, but it also decreases the ability of the driver to control the vehicle. This in turn increases the chance for a fatal accident.  The force of an impact doubles with every 10 miles per hour in speeds above 50 mph.  That increases the chances of someone either being killed or seriously injured in an accident.  Drivers under the age of 30, especially males, are far more likely to be involved in fatal crashes attributed to excessive speed.  Statistically, older drivers are far less likely to speed when they get behind the wheel and are less likely to be involved in accidents involving the unnecessary risks associated with speeding.

Speed is a major cause of accidents involving injuries and fatalities in the state of Texas. According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, nearly 104,000 car crashes in 2012 were caused by driver travelling over the speed limit. Sadly, nearly all of these accidents could have been prevented had the driver not been travelling at an excessive speed.
