Allstate Reports on Most Dangerous Texas Cities for Drivers

A new report issued from Allstate Insurance Co. lists nine cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth as having more accident-prone motorists than anywhere else in Texas.

Garland drivers were ranked as the most dangerous and were approximately 50 percent more likely to get into a crash than the national average. Those in Arlington, Dallas and Mesquite didn’t rate much higher.

The Garland Police Department was rather dismissive of the report, saying that it was too limited in scope and the criteria too random. Experts, however, say that they are not surprised by the findings of the report. Metropolitan areas that are experiencing rapid growth often suffer from such increased risk of accidents since roads that were build decades before were not designed for such high levels of traffic.

“Once you start putting more vehicles in an area, and the road isn’t engineered to handle that amount of traffic, it creates more opportunities for crashes,” said Troy Walden, a researcher at Texas A&M University’s Center for Transportation Safety.

According to Allstate Insurance, the tally was released last month and took into account a total of 200 cities and their safety record. Allstate covers approximately 10% of all insured motorists within the United States.

Three South Texas cities — Brownsville, Laredo and McAllen — had the state’s top safety record. Drivers in Brownsville were among the nation’s best, about 21 percent less likely than the national average to have a wreck. They go almost 13 years between accidents.

Even with every effort made toward safety, accidents can happen at any time. Whether you are on a busy Interstate highway, freeway, city streets or a country road, an auto accident can happen in a spit second.
