A Motorcyclist Killed In Hit-And-Crash, Police Arrested The Driver

According to the Texas Department of Transportation,  in 2019, 16% of all vehicle fatalities in the state of Texas involved a motorcycle. Almost 70% of those fatal crashes occur in urban areas, with just over 30% happening in more rural parts of our state.

A 50-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a violent crash in Arlington on Tuesday night. According to the report appearing on NBCDFW’s website, the motorist that hit him is now in custody.

A spokesperson with the Arlington Police Department said in a statement that the accident happened on Tuesday, August 25th, at approximately 11:29 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Cooper Street.

Police investigators had determined that the motorcyclist was headed northbound on South Cooper Street when 28-year old Felipe Vargas attempted to make a left turn from 1200 Sturgeon Court.  Vargas’ failed to yield and turned directly in front of the biker.

Police say that Vargas abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Paramedics transported the motorcyclist to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.  Authorities did not release the motorcyclist’s identity pending notification of family members.

Police found Vargas a short time later and was placed under arrest. He faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injury, failure to render aid, and intoxication manslaughter.

The hit-and-run crash is currently under investigation.
