Child Dies After Vehicle Ejection, Was Not In Safety Seat
Every state in the country has laws requiring children to be either restrained in an approved child safety seat or buckled in with a seatbelt. In Texas, a child seat must be used for all children under seven years of age and under 57 inches tall. An accident can happen in the blink of an eye, and an unrestrained child can end up getting seriously hurt or worse.
NBCDFW reports that may have been what happened on Thanksgiving night this year when a five-year-old Dallas boy lost his life after he was ejected from the vehicle he was riding in as a passenger.
According to a statement released by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal crash happened at approximately 9:48 p.m. at the Interstate 35E and Northwest Highway interchange. Investigators say that the vehicle struck the attenuator and rolled several times before coming to a stop.
During the rollover crash, 5-year-old Alexander Bonia was ejected from the vehicle. He died as the result of the injuries he suffered in the crash. Dallas County Sheriff’s Office detectives do not believe that Alexander was in child restraints or fastened in by a seatbelt when the accident occurred.
Two other people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. They have been identified as 21-year-old Angel Bonia and 19-year-old Jimmy Delarosa. Officials did not disclose who was driving or their current condition at the release of the report.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The accident is still currently under investigation.
