Man Pleads Guilty to Three Counts of Intoxication Manslaughter

Last Memorial Day weekend, Sr. Cpl. Patty Carter was given the devastating news that her son Jeremy had been killed by a drunk driver. On May 23, 2012, Matthew Moore was driving while intoxicated (DUI). Moore crashed his vehicle into Jeremy Price after running a red light at the intersection of South Ervay and Corinth streets. Moore’s BAC (blood alcohol content) was more than twice the legal limit of 0.08. According to investigators, Moore had been driving 70 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Price, 25, was killed almost immediately. Fellow officers came to Carter’s home to inform her that her son had died. Also in the vehicle at the time of the accident was Price’s friend, 20-year-old Kellie Seaman, who was five months pregnant. Seaman lost her unborn child and she lingered in a coma for 400 days before she died as a result of her injuries.

Price pled guilty to three counts of intoxication manslaughter as part of a plea deal agreed upon by each family involved and has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The maximum penalty that he could have been sentenced was 20 years.

Nothing can compare to the tragedy of losing a loved one due to the irresponsibility of a drunk driver. In the United States, drunk driving is the number one cause of accidents involving serious injuries and fatalities every year. Strict sentences are handed out to those who do decide to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. In Texas, the charge of DUI or DWI is taken very seriously.
