Tourist Drives Car Around Barricade, Killed by Train

A Jordanian national has been killed in a deadly car and train crash in Fort Worth on Saturday afternoon. The accident happened at approximately 2:00 p.m.at the 12600 block of Calloway Cemetery Road at a crossing on the Fort Worth-Arlington border between Centreport and Hurst/Bell stations.

Authorities say that the crossing gates were down and lights were flashing when a white Toyota sedan attempted to go around the barricade right into the path of an oncoming Trinity Railway Express train. The single victim was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle. He is identified as Mohammed al-Tayeb. Al-Tayeb was a native of Jordan. He leaves behind a wife and a 12-year-old son.

One hundred fifty passengers were on aboard the double-decker train at the time of the accident. One passenger did report having chest pains after the incident. However, according to Fort Worth Fire Department Battalion Chief James Barton, that person was examined at the scene and did not need further treatment.

Train and automobile accidents can be catastrophic due to the sheer weight and speed of an oncoming train. Always be certain to stop if you hear a train signal and stop if the crossing arms are down. Never attempt to go around or outrun a train. It is often difficult to tell just how fast an oncoming locomotive is travelling, and such carelessness can end in serious injury or even death. Those barriers serve to protect motorists, pedestrians and others from the dangers of an oncoming train. Waiting a few minutes for a train to go by while you wait is not worth risking your life or the lives of others.

While the driver of the car may ultimately be at fault here, in a train and automobile accident sometimes the railroad companies bear some of the responsibility in preventing train accidents by having correct signals, signs and warnings all in good working order. Federal law dictates that the public must be protected when going across railway tracks., there are other times whereby the train bears some or much of the responsibility.
