When someone carelessly injures or kills someone else, our legal system allows police officers to take the responsible person into custody. This process allows police officials to investigate the incident and determine if the suspected individual should be brought up on charges.
In Dallas, hit-and-run fatalities have increased by 85 percent since 2012, according to state records. This is in spite of the fact lawmakers passed legislation increasing leaving the scene of a fatal crime from a third-degree felony to a first-degree felony. Police officers do try to apprehend these offenders and bring them to justice. If or when they do take the suspect into custody, they can now face up to 20 years in jail, if found guilty under the new hit and run laws.
