Arrest Made In Hit And Run Case On Southwest Durham Lane

A Dallas woman has been arrested by Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office deputies in connection to a hit-and-run crash earlier this month.

The Polk County Itemizer-Observer reports that 47-year-old Kari Lin Smith is believed to have been involved in a crash that happened on Saturday, November 7th, on Southwest Durham Lane near McMinnville and Highway 18.

Investigators with the YCSO believe Smith was behind the wheel of a 2008 Ram 1500 pickup truck that struck and killed 58-year-old Ricardo Morales Avilla of Salem.

During the investigation on November 10th, investigators seized the pickup truck. Evidence inside the vehicle pointed to Smith as having been the driver at the time of the fatal crash.

In a statement from Yamhill County Sheriff Tim Svenson told reporters, “Our hearts go out to Mr. Morales Avila’s family and friends.” he said. “I understand it is a small consolation, but we hope our investigators have helped in some closure for the family that may not have occurred otherwise.”

Smith was arrested in Amity on Wednesday, November 25th, and booked into Yamhill County Correctional Facility. She is being held on the charges of negligent homicide and failure to perform the duties of a driver to an injured person after an accident.

Smith was arraigned on Friday, November 20th, in Yamhill County Circuit Court. The judge in the case has set Smith’s bail at $160,000.
