Dallas Police Department To Analyze Behaviors Using An Algorithm

The Dallas City Council announced that it has approved some $907,000 in funds for the Dallas Police Department to track and identify officer misconduct within its ranks.

CBS Local in Dallas reports that the City Council approved the contract with Benchmark Analytics on Wednesday, November 11. When implemented, the system will collect data on individual officers and track their behavior by using an algorithm. If any problems in behavior are noted, the system will pick up on them.

Lt. Stephen Williams, with the Dallas Police Department, told CBS in an email, “The goal is to be able to identify problematic behaviors and correct them before they become an issue.”

The Benchmark system is currently in use in larger metropolitan areas such as Albuquerque, Nashville, and the other regions throughout New Jersey.

Dallas Police Association President Mike Mata told CBS that in addition to the department’s Internal Affairs division, the department also has a Citizen Review Board that currently investigates each complaint against officers. He is unclear why another third party would be needed to do further investigation and is concerned that the Benchmark system could incorrectly label officers as being troubled.

“It just isn’t necessary, and it definitely isn’t worth spending a million dollars,” Mata said.

The Dallas Police Department plans to implement the new system within the next 30 -90 days.
