Fort Worth Residents Put Pressure On Councilmen To Deal With Street Racing Problem
Residents of Fort Worth want something done about the ongoing problem with illegal street racing. After a death that killed three over the weekend, residents were prepared to take action by circulating a petition around the community to goad city officials into action.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that since Monday, more than 1,800 signatures have been gathered so far. They want Mayor Betsy Price, the members of the Fort Worth City Council, and Fort Worth Police Chief Ed Kraus to deal with the rampant problem swiftly.
Organizer David Ferrell, who started the petition, told the Star-Telegram that the problem has been going on for several years. It was the deaths of a married couple and one of the street racers involved in an incident on Burr Oak Lane on Friday that prompted Fort Worth residents to tell city administrators that they’ve had enough. Even after the fatal crash before the weekend, street racing has shown no signs of abating.
District 6 Councilman Jungus Jordan lives in and represents the area where the fatal crash happened. On Monday, Jordan issued a statement in which he said that he shared the community’s concerns and brought up memories of his 14-year-old sister who was killed in a street racing incident years earlier.
“I can assure you that our City Manager, Mayor, City Council, and City Staff, especially our professional police officers and city traffic managers, do everything reasonably possible to keep our city safe and enforce traffic laws,” Jordan told reporters. “The loss of any life is one too many,” he added.
