Woman Flees Seen After Good Samaritan Offers Aid

After getting into an accident, the instinct to flee can seem almost overwhelming. However, according to Texas law, drivers must stay at the scene after a crash until an officer of the law says it’s ok to leave. It is also a requirement that drivers involved in an accident render aid whenever possible.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that a woman has been arrested after she not only failed to render aid but also stole the pickup truck of a Good Samaritan who tried to help in a fatal accident she was involved in.

The League City Police Department’s Facebook page said that the crash happened on Wednesday, October 28, in the 1200 Block of the Gulf Freeway at the Highway 96 exit ramp when  19-year-old Keniqua Pleasant’s vehicle collided with another car, pushing the second vehicle into traffic on the feeder road.

The force of impact forced the second car over a concrete dividing wall and into the median, where it struck a bulldozer in a nearby construction area.  The man inside the second vehicle was declared dead at the scene of the crash. The victim has been identified as Jeremy Campbell of League City.

An eyewitness to the accident stopped and got out of his pickup truck to offer assistance. Pleasant jumped into the truck of the Good Samaritan and fled the scene.  Police later spotted the abandoned pickup truck on Bay Area Boulevard. Officers from the Houston Police Department later found Pleasant walking on foot in the area and placed her under arrest.

Pleasant has been charged with failure to stop and render aid and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. A judge has set Pleasant’s bond at $50,000. More charges may follow in the incident.

The accident is currently under investigation. Anyone with any information about the crash is being asked to contact the League City Police Department at (281) 332-2566.
