A Head-On Collision On US Hwy 84 Leaves One Dead, Others Injured

A multi-vehicle accident along U.S. Highway and County Road 7500 yesterday has left one person dead and others injured.

Everything Lubbock reported on its website that the crash happened shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1st, near the city of Stanton.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said in a statement that a pickup truck was hauling a trailer and heading south-eastbound on Highway 84 when the driver, 18-year-old Thomas Henry Erskine Jr., came upon a construction vehicle.  Erskine took hard evasive maneuvers to the left to avoid hitting other vehicles in the construction area.

Erskine’s pickup truck then went through the median and directly into the path of a Chevy Tahoe SUV being driven by 59-year-old Berta Arispe of Colorado City, Colorado. The two vehicles collided head-on.

The passenger inside the Tahoe, 89-year-old Elieova Franco Arispe, was injured in the crash. As he was being taken to a hospital in Lubbock for treatment for his injuries, Arispe died.  Emergency crews had been unsuccessful in trying to revive him.

A second passenger inside the SUV, 22-year-old Madison Halie Karner of Sweetwater, was also injured in the collision and was taken to University Medical Center. A third passenger, 59-year-old Juan Soliz Garcia, was also transported to University Medical Center after he was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Authorities have not said whether anyone in the SUV was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

DPS says that Erskine suffered only minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation by DPS.  No citations had been issued at the time of the report.
