Driver Caught After Fleeing A Hit-And-Run Accident

The Texas Transportation Code § 550.023 states that motorists involved in a motor vehicle accident are required to stop at the scene of the crash until law enforcement arrives. By law, drivers must supply their driver’s license, insurance, and other information. They must also render aid to those injured.

According to an article appearing on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram website, a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian last week has been arrested and is facing several charges.

A spokesperson for the Arlington Police Department said that the accident happened on Thursday, August 17th, at approximately 3:36 p.m. in the 900 block of Division Street. A pedestrian was loading a vehicle from a car sales lot onto a hauler parked in the center lane of Division Street when a van struck them. The driver of the van fled the scene of the crash and neither called 911 nor attempt to render aid to the victim.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and took 55-year-old Jose Ruben Lopez of Rancho Cucamonga, California, to Arlington Hospital in critical condition.  Lopez died over the weekend as the result of injuries he suffered in the crash.

The driver of the van did park at a nearby business where they were picked up by another driver.  Police later learned the identity of the driver of the van as 37-year-old Gabriel Hudson.

Hudson later returned to the scene of the crash with a family member and turned himself over to the police. Hudson was placed under arrest and is facing several charges, including hit and run and failure to render aid.  Other more serious charges may be pending.
