This is certainly a freak accident for the family. We don’t expect cars to suddenly charge through our yards. But alcohol increases the risks of accidents, and they’re no longer out of nowhere. If the allegations of drunk driving are true, this woman will have a lot to answer for. She may also face a civil suit from the family for this senseless act.
The state will also proceed with their own charges. Drunk driving is punished severely in every state, and often has effects that last far beyond the jail time. License suspensions, parole, interlock devices, and other measures to control and punish drunk drivers can last for years after the incident.
However, considering that the family of the deceased woman will never get her back, it may not be long enough. If you are injured by a drunk driver, consider speaking with a personal injury attorney about your options.
