Officers Under Investigation For Unsanctioned Drag Race

An unsanctioned drag race between two officers has lead to an investigation by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. WFAA reports.

Street racing is an increasing problem thanks to the coronavirus pulling people off the roads. Now two officers are under investigation for drag racing in their cruisers. While the event did happen at a sanctioned track, the officers did not get authorized to race from their superiors.

Viral video caught the two police cruisers racing each other at the Yello Belly Drag Strip in Grand Prairie. A large crowd watched the race to cheer on the officers. Several went on the record to say that it was a bonding experience between the public and police.

However, a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office said it was unsanctioned. It is unknown at this time if the drivers will face disciplinary action.

It causes a loss of trust when the police do not follow the same rules as everyone else. Illegal street racers will point to this and wonder why they are being punished instead of the police. Granted, they did race at a track meant for this activity, but it does send a poor message.

We hope that the investigation proceeds smoothly and that future incidents like this do not happen, or at least are sanctioned in advance.
