Investigators Are Still Looking For Answers Surrounding A Crash That Killed Two People On US Highway 271

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 37,133 traffic fatalities on U.S. Highways and roads in 2017. Though there are a notable number of accidents that occur outside of the control of the driver, this number is marginal. The vast majority of these crashes were due to human error, such as driver distraction or even a medical emergency.

Station KLTV in Tyler reports that what may have led to a two-vehicle crash along U.S. Highway 271 in Titus County earlier this month claimed the lives of two people has still not been determined.

The fatal crash happened on Friday, June 12th, at approximately 9:20 p.m. about 4 miles from Talco.  A spokesperson from the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement that 82-year-old Rosaellen Johnson was driving a 2013 GMC Sierra pickup truck southbound on U.S. 271 while 33-year-old Augustina Higuera, driving a 2019 GMC Terrain, was traveling northbound.

Though there is admittedly several unanswered questions surrounding the accident, investigators have been able to determine that Johnson’s vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with Higuera’s truck.  Texas Department of Public Safety officers arrived at the crash site.  Both women were declared dead at the scene. So far, investigators are uncertain what caused Johnson to cross over into the opposite lane.

According to the press release, the fatal crash is still under investigation, and no further information was immediately available at the time of the report.
