One Teenager Dies, Two Hospitalized With Critical Injuries In A Suspected DUI-Accident In Houston

A two-vehicle crash in Houston last week is being blamed for the death of a North Texas teen and the serious injury of two others.

The NBC affiliate in Dallas – Fort Worth reports that the fatal crash happened in the early morning hours of Friday, June 5th. A white Hummer collided with a BMW that the three teens had been riding in.

Authorities say that the force of the impact caused the smaller vehicle to split in half.  Debris from the collision was scattered about the pavement.

Paramedics arrived at the site of the accident and declared 16-year-old Tristan Sanders of DeSoto dead at the scene.  Sanders had been riding in the back seat of the car as a passenger at the time of the crash.

The two other teens were rushed to an area hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered in the crash. At the time of the report, they were listed in serious condition.

The driver of the Hummer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  He was arrested at the scene by Harris County Sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a statement issued by Sean Tearrre with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, preliminary investigations reveal that speed was likely a factor in the fatal collision. So far, it is unclear which of the two vehicles might have run a red light at the intersection.   Teare also said that the driver of the Hummer might be facing additional charges in the case.

Sanders was a freshman at DeSoto High School where he was an accomplished athlete. Both coaches and fellow students at DeSoto ISD told reporters that he was respectful and hard working.   He had been visiting relatives in the Houston area at the time of the accident.
