A High Speed, DUI Police Chase Resulted In The Death Of An Infant

The Dallas News reports that a 1-year-old infant girl was killed and an additional three people were injured in a crash involving a suspected DUI driver in Garland on Saturday night.

According to law enforcement officials in Garland, police officers attempted to stop the driver of an SUV after they blew through two red lights at two separate intersections off of Broadway Boulevard at Oates Road and Duck Creek Drive.

Police officers continued the high-speed pursuit through Mesquite and Garland and onto I-30 and I-635 before breaking off the chase.  Officials report that the suspect vehicle reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour before police ceased the pursuit out of safety concerns for other motorists.  Police say that during the chase, the driver of the suspect vehicle occasionally turned off his headlights.

A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter continued to track the suspect vehicle from a distance. It was determined that the driver exited I-635 and ran a third red light at the intersection of Northwest Highway and Shiloah Road where he collided with a passenger vehicle that was occupied by a man and woman and two children.

Hugo Alberto-Maturino and Miriam Minaya, both 30-years- of age, and their two-year-old son, Cole Maturino were taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities say that one-year-old Alice Maturino was ejected from her parents’ vehicle during the crash died at the scene.

Police have arrested 19-year-old Adrian Maldonado on the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, intoxication manslaughter, three counts of intoxication assault, felony evading, and other related charges. Court documents indicate that Maldonado had an outstanding arrest warrant for probation violations involving a burglary in Dallas County.

Also arrested in connection to the incident was passenger Denise Vivas. She faces a charge of evading arrest.

Both Maldonado and Vivas were being held in the Garland Jail at the time of the report.
