Pedestrian Hit By Plane At Austin Airport

An unusual accident happened at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. CBS reported on the fatal incident.

The FAA is investigating why a pedestrian was killed on the runway of the airport. A Southwest Airlines pilot reported the person running just after he landed and tried to maneuver the plane away from him.

Unfortunately, it seems the man was hit by the engine of the plane, leaving a dent in the cowling. The media reported that the man was not dressed in uniform, nor did he have airport identification.

No one on the Boeing 737 was injured in the crash and the plane was able to get to the gate safely. Southwest is working with law enforcement to figure out what happened. It is unknown why this person was on the runway in the first place.

Even before the terrorist attacks of 2001, only official personnel are allowed onto the tarmac. Planes must follow strict procedures during takeoff and landing to stay safe. Finding a pedestrian in the runway is probably the last thing the pilot expected.

Needless to say, this isn’t a type of accident you’d see often. The FAA will be sure to investigate how the man got out there in the first place.
