Family Wins $20 Million In Greyhound Bus Accident

A Dallas jury has awarded $20 million to the surviving family members of a man who was killed when he was running to catch up to a Greyhound bus more than two years ago.

In a story appearing on the NBC affiliate in Dallas, the 12-person jury awarded the settlement in a 10 – 2 split in favor of the plaintiffs for the death of Hunter Brown.

The jury awarded $18 million to Brown’s family members, Dr. Barry Brown and Paula Becker, allowing  Greyhound to keep the additional $2 million because it found Hunter Brown to be 10% at fault in the incident.

According to the report submitted before the court, 25-year-old Brown was traveling to California to Washington State when the bus made a late-night stop. The bus driver, Arthur Coley, was accused of having left the rest stop before the announced time of departure.

Brown, realizing the bus was leaving without him, ran up to the side of the bus and pounded on the door, asking Coley to stop the bus. Coley was turning the bus right from the rest stop onto an adjacent roadway and rather than stopping, continued turning the bus right.  Brown lost his balance and fell under the right, front wheels of the bus. Passengers onboard testified hearing the two thumps of the bus running over Brown before the bus came to a stop.

Charla Aldous, attorney for the Browns, told the press in a statement after the jury verdict, “This was a horrible, entirely preventable tragedy. Greyhound has an obligation to keep its passengers safe. That certainly was not the case here. We are thankful for the jury’s careful consideration of the evidence and for holding Greyhound responsible.”
