Big Rig Struck By Train Near Kaufman County Line

The driver of a large dump truck was killed when his big rig was struck by an Amtrak train near the Dallas and Kaufman County Line late last month.

The CBS Local station in Dallas – Fort Worth reports that the fatal accident happened on Monday, September 30th, at approximately 4:15 p.m. at the railway crossing located near Lawson and Scyene Road near the county line. Authorities are still trying to determine why the driver of the 18-wheeler attempted to go around the railway crossing arms.

The driver, whose identity was not released at the time of the initial report, was reported to have died at the scene of the accident. His identity was later released by authorities as being 22-year-old Carlos Alvarez.  The engineer for Amtrak train #22 told Dallas County Sheriff’s deputies that the driver went around the crossing arms, but was struck by the front of the locomotive before he could make it across.

The passenger train then pushed the dump truck eastbound for a half a mile down the tracks before coming to a complete stop.

Amtrak officials say that there had been 79 people on board the train at the time of the fatal crash. No one on the train was injured.
