Airless Tires May Be On The Market In 2024

No matter when it happens, getting a flat tire or a blowout is never pleasant. Soon, such inconveniences while driving may become a thing of the past.

The CBS local station in Dallas – Fort Worth recently reported. Michelin and General Motors have joined forces to produce an environmentally friendly tire prototype that will eliminate flat tires and blowouts.

The companies have dubbed the tire the Uptis prototype; which stands for Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System. This latest development in tire technology was unveiled at the Movin’On Summit on Tuesday, June 4th in Montreal, Canada.

According to Steve Kiefer, GM’s head of global purchasing and supply chain, Uptis is an ideal solution to help the automotive industry meet the future and is in line with both company’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.

A spokesperson for Michelin estimates that there are more than 200 million tires that are discarded each year because of damage due to punctures, blowouts, or improper inflation.

The companies expect to begin testing the Uptis prototype pneumatic tires on Michigan roadways later this year using Chevrolet Volt vehicles. The goal is to have the tires available to U.S. consumers by 2024.

So far Michelin and GM have not announced the price point of the Uptis tires.
