Teen Steals A Joyride, Crashes Mother’s Car

Several states have programs in which young drivers can obtain a permit to begin learning how to drive. This modern rite of passage can begin as young as 14 years-of-age. However, because both inexperience and not knowing the rules of the road can cause accidents, those states also require young and inexperienced drivers to have an adult present while they’re behind the wheel. That’s not what happened in this case.

The CBS affiliate station in Dallas – Fort Worth recently reported about one North Texas 15-year-old who decided he’d rather venture out on his own in his mom’s vehicle and led police on a high-speed chase.

Police in Haltom City said in a statement that the Kennedale teen borrowed his mom’s Mercedes Benz in the early morning hours on Thursday, April 4th. At approximately 1:45 a.m. officers thought the person behind the wheel driving erratically might have been intoxicated. When police officers attempted to pull the Mercedes over, the boy took off. Authorities say that at times the high-speed chase reached more than 100 mph.

Police caught up to the teen when he managed to slam his mother’s car into a concrete pillar for an underpass which runs beneath State Highway 121 and Minnis Drive. After the crash, the teen was taken to an area hospital for treatment where he was listed in good condition. Authorities later released him to the custody of his mother.

The 15-year-old is currently facing the charge of evading arrest and the potential of additional charges related to the incident.
