Police Chief And Son Among Those Killed In Horrible Crash

The town of Bardwell was recently struck by tragedy after an accident on Highway 34 in Ellis County on Sunday, March 24th.

The CBS Local affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth reported a little after 10:00 a.m. that morning, Texas Department of Public Safety were called to the scene of a head-on collision which happened along Highway 34 near the town of Bardwell.

Investigators say that the collision involved a westbound 2012 Dodge pickup truck and an eastbound Ford Crown Victoria sedan. Authorities are uncertain why the pickup truck wandered into the eastbound lanes and hit the Crown Victoria sedan head-on. Among those killed were Bardwell Chief of Police, Michael Spurgeon Sr. and his adult son Michael Spurgeon Jr. who was a volunteer firefighter with the local fire department and worked at the Texas Motorplex.

The loss of their long-time police chief and his son, both devoted to community service, has left the town of Bardwell in shock. Neighbor and family friend of the Spurgeon’s, Wanda Smith told CBS, “He (Spurgeon Sr.) was everything. He can’t be replaced.” Both the Bardwell Volunteer Fire Department and the Texas Motorplex released statements via Twitter offering condolences and prayers to the friends and families of the victims.

Also killed in the crash were a father and his two children, all residents of the town of Rice in Navarro County. Their identities were not released pending notification of family members.
