Concrete Thrown From Overpass, Smashes And Kills Driver

A driver has been killed after a chunk of concrete was thrown from an overpass on U.S. 91 near Nashville on Tuesday morning. According to a report appearing on the Dallas – Fort Worth CBS affiliate website, the concrete went through the vehicle’s windshield and hit the male driver in the face.

Investigators with the Nashville Metro Police Department said in a statement that the accident happened at approximately 5:00 a.m. A slab of concrete went through the windshield of a Nissan GT-R being driven by Joe C. Shelton, Jr., 54, of Nashville during his morning commute to work.

Shelton lost control of his vehicle and sideswiped a Toyota pickup truck before hitting a guardrail. No one in the Toyota was injured, however, Shelton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have determined that the concrete chunk did not come from the Shelby Avenue overpass itself and had to have been thrown to the highway below.

Authorities say that were additional reports of similar incidents involving rocks and concrete being thrown from the Shelby Avenue Bridge just the night before at approximately 11:00 p.m. One of those pieces went through the front windshield of a big rig and landed in the passenger side of the cab, narrowly missing the driver. Reports say a total of 4 vehicles have been damaged so far.

The case is still currently under investigation. Anyone with any information regarding the incidents is being asked to come forward.
