Success for UNT Grad Who Suffered From Injuries

Fulfilling the dream of going to college and eventually receiving a degree involves big dreams and years of hard work.  For one student who just graduated from the University of North Texas, however, it was an even bigger challenge than it was for most of her classmates.

In a story featured on the NBC Dallas Fort Worth station,Amber Lacy, who recently graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism, finally receiving that diploma was all about faith, determination, and hard work.

“I was super happy,” she said. “I was thinking, I did it! I really did this.”

Just a few days after Amber graduated from high school four years ago, she was a passenger in a car that was involved in a major accident. Even though Amber was sitting behind the driver at the time of the horrific crash, she was the one who was hurt most in the accident  Amber ended up in the hospital in a coma that lasted for several days. Though doctors agreed Amber was lucky to be alive, she had been left with a traumatic brain injury.

This injury left Amber wondering if she would ever be able to achieve her dreams of going to college and earning a degree. The accident also left her with the challenge of having to learn to read and write all over again.

Amber had a very good support system of both family and friends who aided her during her recovery.  Part of her recovery consisted of those same friends giving her photographs with names on the back to help Amber remember their names.  Over time, Amber was able to regain the ability to read and write.

Today, when she is asked whether she knows how blessed she is, she says, “I know.”

Walking across the stage and claiming her degree really was a dream come true and a fantastic reward that was not easy for her to attain. Now that she’s achieved her goal, Amber is ready to move on to the next phase of her life. As an exciting postscript, Amber was just recently hired by a Dallas radio station to work in their promotions department.

Getting hurt in an accident can have life-changing consequences.  Amber’s story of triumph is an inspiring one.  After an accident, however, families are often left having to pay for medical care, or be off of work during recovery as well as having to deal with other related costs. Such a situation can present a real financial hardship and leave families struggling.
