Boy Celebrates Birthday One Day after Hit and Run Accident

A Dallas boy came home from the hospital Sunday, just a day after he would have celebrated his birthday had it not been for a hit and run driver who hit him Saturday. The accident happened Saturday afternoon when 7-year-old Lorenzo Cantu ran across the street with his dogs in the 3100 block near his grandfather’s home in West Dallas. Surveillance video at his grandfather’s house shows the boy crossing the street.

However, it was when Lorenzo ran back across the street that the boy got hit by a white pickup truck. Lorenzo was taken to the hospital and suffered mild injuries. Thankfully, he was home the following day to celebrate the 7th birthday he missed because of the accident. Lorenzo does have some difficulty in walking because his toes were run over. Other than minor bumps, bruises, cuts and scratches, Lorenzo is expected to fully recover.

Dallas police say they are actively investigating the case, and the family members told reporters that they have given a copy of the surveillance video to police. The vehicle captured on the DVR video footage from the family appears to show a white Ford pickup truck with four doors, dual tires on the back with fender flairs and a reinforced bumper on the front. It also looks like the there’s a ladder rack that runs the length of the truck, and it was pulling a flatbed trailer that has what seems to be plywood.

Anyone with information should call Dallas police.

Texas law makes it a requirement that anyone who is involved in an accident to stop following the crash or be guilty of hit and run. Anyone who is involved in an accident is also required by Texas law to render aid if possible as well. In the case of an accident involving property damage, injury or death, this is especially true.

If the accident involves injuries or death, you are also required by law to provide identification and your personal information, such as your driver’s license and insurance information if it is requested by officials. Police and other law enforcement officers will generally gather this information from everyone at the scene of the accident. Because of this, never drive without your driver’s license and proof of insurance card.
