Pedestrian Hit by Commuter Train, Survives

A pedestrian has been hit by a DART light rail train on Monday afternoon at the Dallas Convention Center station and survived. According to investigators, the incident occurred during rush hour when a train was arriving at the station. A DART spokesman said that a person walked onto the tracks in front of the train and was struck by the train.

Every day pedestrians take a risk whenever they go out into the world. This is especially true in areas such as downtown or busy transit centers. Here a person on foot will contend with cars, heavy trucks, buses, and trains along with other hazards.

Accidents involving trains can be very serious and even deadly. Even with monorail or light rail transportation vehicles, accidents can happen. Business commuters often rely on trains to get them to their work and back home again on a daily basis.  Families rely on these convenient and relatively inexpensive modes of transportation for outings into the city on weekends. Passenger rail trains sometimes carry tens of thousands of passengers on a daily basis.

With such heavy use, the risk of an accident happening also increases. While the statistics show that travel by these trains is one of the safest modes of travel, accidents can and do happen. The cause of an accident can be due to any number of factors such as the negligence on the part of engineers, railways that are inadequately maintained, as well as distracted drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. These are just a few of what can cause a railway accident. In many, if not most cases, such accidents could have been prevented.
