Alleged Drunk Driver Leads Police on 40 Minute Chase

Arlington police were led on a chase by a suspected drunk driver early Monday morning.

It all began when officers attempted to stop a white pickup truck in the 4900 block of Little Road. The driver refused to pull over but finally stopped his vehicle about 40 minutes later at the 2900 block of Dottie Lynn Parkway

The police placed the driver and a passenger in the vehicle under arrest. Charges are pending further investigation.

In the state of Texas the law is clear: Don’t drink and drive. Those who drive under the influence of alcohol (DUI) are guilty of a serious crime. DUI accidents are some of the most frightening accidents to have happen. This is because the injuries can be far more catastrophic or even fatal.

The National Transportation Safety Board in May made a recommendation that states lower the threshold for driving while intoxicated to a blood-alcohol content of .05. In the State of Texas, as with many other states in the country, the current legal blood alcohol level that anyone can have to operate a vehicle is .08. The legal limit for truck drivers and all other holders of commercial licenses, however, has already been lowered to that of .04.

When a person dies as a result of the actions of a DUI driver, the charge then is elevated to that of intoxication manslaughter. This is a second-degree felony. Intoxication manslaughter is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and a prison sentence of between 2 and 20 years. A driver convinced of intoxication manslaughter may also face 240 to 800 hours of community service, according to the judge’s recommendation.
