Rat Terrier Awakens Family Just in Time

A family in Fair Park has been saved from a house fire by the family dog early Thursday morning.

The Olade family was awakened by their rat terrier, whose name is Mommy, at around 2:30 a.m. only to discover that their house, in the 1500 block of Caldwell Avenue was on fire. Gabriel Olade dialed 911 while her husband tried to fight the fire himself. However, there was too much smoke and fire and the couple was forced to retreat from the blaze.

From outside of their home, the Olades’ could see the flames and smoke coming out of their home’s attic. Firefighters arrived on the scene and began to put out the fire.

The home suffered extensive damage, but Gabriela Olade was just grateful that she and her husband and Mommy were able to get out. One firefighter suffered injuries from the blaze; however he is expected to fully recover from his injuries.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

This family was very lucky. House fires can be catastrophic. Fires can cause devastating injuries along with loss of property, jobs and personal livelihood. Injuries such as burns and even death are sometimes caused by fire. The time and anguish that is required for recovery after a fire and the displacement of a family can be both disorienting and overwhelming. Causes such as arson, defective electrical appliances or electrical wiring in the home, a gas leak, or carelessness by homeowners can be contributing factors.

After a fire, families often have to take time off of work in order to take care of the aftermath. This loss of time and income can add to mounting expenses that a family can afford. If someone has suffered burns, those types of injuries can take weeks and sometimes months to heal. There are situations where reconstructive surgery is required and this can also add to precious recovery time. All of these things can add up quickly and can wipe you and your family out financially.
