Officer Injured by Stick in the Line of Duty

A Dallas police officer accidentally discharged his gun while trying to draw it on a man who was running toward him Monday night near West Ledbetter Drive and South Westmoreland Road Tuesday evening.
The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Oscar Uriel Almanza. Two officers with the Dallas police department were taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center with minor injuries.
Police were responding to a report placed by a resident that an unfamiliar man was sitting on the front porch of a neighbor’s home in the 3800 block of Pictureline Drive at approximately 8:30 p.m.
When Officer Curtis Brown, arrived at the scene, he saw the resident who had filed the initial report with police arguing with the man on the porch. When the officer approached, the man began to walk away.
According to officials, Officer Brown ordered the man to stop and saw that the man was carrying an object. The man appeared to officers as being incoherent, and then charged police officers with a stick in his hand.
The officer drew his weapon and tried to retreat from the oncoming assault. The man struck the officer on the side of the neck, and the officer unintentionally fired his weapon. Police say no one was wounded by the shot.
The man began walking away again and Officer Brown called for additional personnel. Police officers finally found the man walking in the 4000 block of Shoreline Drive. The suspect was subdued and placed under arrest.
One officer injured his hand while trying to arrest the man and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The officer who fired his weapon also was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
Almanza was also taken to the hospital but was later released and booked into the Dallas County Jail on charges of assault on a public servant and resisting arrest.
