Two Children Injured in Tubing Accident

Two children, an 8-year-old and a 4-year-old, were injured in a boating accident that took place on Joe Pool Lake at around 8:40 p.m. Sunday night.

The children were hurt when the tube they were riding on was struck by another boat. The 8-year-old was airlifted to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas in critical condition, while the 4-year-old was taken by ambulance and is listed in stable condition. Two other children on the tube were treated and released at the scene with minor injuries. All of the children had been wearing life jackets.

Public Information Officer, Lyle Gensler, of the Grand Prairie Police Department, said in a statement that the responsible parties have been identified and that an investigation is underway. No charges have yet been filed.

Families spending time on the water enjoying leisure activities is just a natural part of summer. No one ever thinks of the possibility that an accident can turn family fun into a nightmare. Too often water safety ends up being just an afterthought. When an accident happens, sometimes it’s too late.

Most of the causes of waterway and boating accidents are completely preventable. Whether you are on a private boat, a jet ski, or other type of water going vessel such as a float or a tube, taking safety precautions is important. When children are near water, they should always have on a lie jacket and be under adult supervision. Of course, even while taking every precaution, the unexpected can happen.

Some of the causes for waterway and boating accidents are not wearing lifejackets or proper protective gear, unsupervised swimming, driving a boat or other water-going vessel under the influence of alcohol or other substances, inexperienced swimmers or boat operators, water conditions or weather conditions that are unfavorable or unsafe.

The lion’s share of responsibility for safety will most often fall upon the owner of a boat or vessel to have taken all necessary safety precautions and to insure the safety of all of the passengers aboard or anyone else who might be in the vicinity. Swimmers, other boats and vessels, and stationary objects on the waterway are all things to be aware of at all times. But even when a boat owner or passengers have taken every precaution to insure the safety of the vessel and everyone on board, accidents can happen.
