Fried Chicken Destroys Storage Units
A fire broke out in a rented storage unit when two men were apparently trying to fry chicken inside the unit. The blaze destroyed parts of the building.
Denton County Fire officials said the fire broke out on Tuesday night at the Alliance Raceway Storage on FM 156 in Justin.
The person who had rented the storage unit had gone there to get camping equipment for an upcoming camping trip. The man and his friend then decided to cook dinner at the storage facility before embarking on their camping adventure. Unfortunately, the men got more of a lesson in camp fires than they bargained for.
Investigators believe the men had left the fryer unattended when it caught fire. The fire then spread to other units. A total of eight storage units were damaged in the blaze.
All of the other storage unit renters who had items that were destroyed in the fire have been contacted by the management of Alliance Raceway Storage.
Officials say that it is unlikely that criminal charges will be filed since the fire was an accident. Potentially, however, there still may be civil cases filed against the men on behalf of the company and those who lost property in the fire. Many storage facilities state quite plainly in their leases that they are not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen goods. Some storage facilities do, however, carry insurance that insures against such things. It pays to find out what the procedure is in the lease of a storage unit if you do need to make a claim. Renters are generally responsible for carrying insurance for apartments, and this is also true when they lease a self-storage unit. The insurance necessary for such storage should cover theft, flood and fire damage at minimum.
