Theater Troupe Members Killed in the Panhandle After Crash

Five people of a theater troupe, three who were West Texas A&M  students, have been killed in a car accident in the Texas Panhandle.

According to official statements released on Tuesday, four of victims of the crash were dancers in the musical, “Texas”, while the fifth victim worked in the box office according to Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation Executive Director Kris Miller.

The five were returning from an end-of-the-year party on Monday night when the accident occurred. According to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Christopher Ray Diaz, the driver, disregarded a stop sign and as the vehicle was attempting to turn onto U.S. 287 near Dumas, about 40 miles north of Amarillo, cutting off a southbound 18-wheeler causing the vehicle to be hit broadside on the passenger’s side.

The load that the 18-wheeler was carrying came off of the trailer and landed on top of the driver’s side. All five were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Investigators say that it is as yet unknown whether alcohol may have played a part in the accident.

A sixth person in the car was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where he is listed in critical condition. The driver of the tractor trailer, Theron Arthur McSay, 70, of Fort Collins, Colorado, was listed in stable condition at the same hospital.

The last performance of the summer for the musical production was scheduled for Saturday.

Whether or not alcohol played a role in the crash, it is important to remember never to cut off another driver. You could cause an accident. When you are merging into traffic, make sure that you have plenty of room. This is especially true if the other vehicle is a semi-truck or 18-wheeler. Fully loaded, it takes them far longer to stop and to avoid an accident.

More important, however, is avoiding the dangers of drinking and driving or driving under the influence (DUI) No matter who or where you are, driving under the influence of alcohol is considered against the law. Intoxication behind the wheel is one of the leading causes of fatal car accidents in the United States. The legal limit of intoxication under the wheel is .08% for holders of a standard driver’s license and .04% for those who hold a commercial driver’s license such as truck drivers.

Never be tempted to drink and drive. The danger of increasing your likelihood of getting into an accident and the lives risked are simply not worth it.
