Hit and Run Leaves One Dead
An accident involving a fatality closed down a busy intersection in Plano at approximately 1:40 a.m. Friday morning.
A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, says that a Nissan Altima was either stopped or moving slowly at the intersection of the President George Bush Turnpike service road and Preston Road. The Altima was rear ended by an Infinity that had been traveling at a high speed.
The driver in the slower moving Altima was killed. The driver of the vehicle that hit the slower moving vehicle attempted to leave the scene of the accident on foot, failing to attempt to render aid. The fleeing driver, however, did not make it too far because of their own injuries from the accident.
Police officers did find the second driver approximately one mile away. They were then taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Currently, police have not stated what the charges pending against the driver of the Infinity will be. It has not yet been decided whether the fleeing driver will be charged with hit and run. Police also did not state whether or not alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
No names in connection with the accident have been released.
Some of the worst accidents are those involving a hit and run. Sometimes it can be fear that causes a person to run after hitting and injuring or even killing another person in an accident. That is because it is an extremely serious charge when that person is finally caught.
The accident alone was a tragedy. However, because this person attempted to flee the scene of the accident, even on foot, there was a fatality involved even on foot, fleeing the scene means that they could face third-degree felony charges.
In addition to a potential felony charge, recently, the Texas Senate unanimously approved a measure that would give stiffer penalties for those guilty of hit-and-run accidents. This new legislation will place the failure to stop render aid in a deadly accident on the same level of penalty as intoxication manslaughter: a second degree felony. This driver also more than likely faces a civil suit filed on behalf of the family of the driver who was killed.
