DUI Driver Crashes into Living Room
Two recent incidents of drinking and driving that happened in less than a week have a Carrollton neighborhood more than a little concerned.
The accidents, one occurring late Tuesday evening and a second on Saturday, both were the result of drink drivers losing control and crashing their vehicles into homes along the same street located near the Dallas North Tollway and President George Bush Turnpike..
20-year-old John White was arrested by local police, for suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI). A police spokesperson said that the suspect, who is underage, managed to hit two parked cars before coming to a stop by slamming into a house.
According to Monica Perez and her cousin Patricia Portillo, who were watching movies late Tuesday night, the crash sounded like an explosion when a pickup truck came barreling into a front bedroom. Luckily, no one was in the room at the time. A third occupant in the home, a 12-year old who is wheelchair-bound was also safely out of the way at the time of the crash.
On Saturday, Vicki Barkley says another allegedly drunk driver who had been travelling on the same road hit a mailbox and crashed into her house. Barkley’s home is located approximately one mile away from Tuesday’s crash site. No one was home at the time and there were no injuries.
Accidents can happen at any time, and often happen in the home. No one expects that the place which should provide shelter and safety could suffer damage from a drunk driver.
Texas has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinking. Teen drivers have less experience with both driving and alcohol so they often will misjudge their ability to drive after consuming alcohol. Statistics show that teen drivers are also more inclined to drive over the speed limit than more experienced drivers. The element of speed added to a teen driver’s inexperience on the road and use of alcohol can be a dangerous and sometimes deadly combination. After the accident, this can be especially troublesome for the parents of young drivers who have been involved in accidents, when the teen has been DUI. The parents face the prospect of being dropped from insurance coverage entirely for allowing them to drive, and could also face charges of negligence.
