Stolen Car Smashes into Yogurt Shop

Police said someone ran a stolen vehicle into Yummee Yogurt in Arlington early Wednesday morning. It happened just before 5 a.m. at the store on Park Row Drive near Arlington High School.

Police believe the driver was attempting to steal from the yogurt shop. But it was no surprise that the crash caught the attention of some people nearby and they called police.

The man fled the scene of the crash without taking any money

Motor vehicles are stolen in Dallas area at the rate of more than 25 per day. Automobile owners can reduce the amount of risk that they expose themselves to by always locking your vehicle or using a deterrent like car alarms, steering wheel or brake locks. There are also more advanced features on the market like passive immobilizers. These require a specific key to operate the vehicle and can turn the vehicle off remotely. Without the key, the car or truck needs to be towed. Such devices have cut the number of auto thefts in half. Safety and security systems such as those available through Lojack or OnStar boast a nearly 95% recovery rate of vehicles that are stolen from their subscribers.

However, even if your vehicle is recovered after being stolen it doesn’t mean your troubles are over. If your vehicle is involved in a major crime, it could mean more headaches for you. When a car is stolen, if it gets into an accident, especially if attempting to evade law enforcement, it will not matter if the vehicle owner purchased coverage or not–there is no coverage for that accident. If the owner of a vehicle that is stolen does not have Uninsured Motorist Coverage on themselves or their vehicle, they will soon find themselves out of luck.

Insurance is a contract. It requires an insurance company to defend you and pay for damages when you are negligent or when you allow someone to use your car and they are negligent. It does not, however, cover unauthorized use of the vehicle – including when a vehicle is stolen. Because of this, regular car insurance will not cover an accident if it was stolen.
