School Bus Involved in Fatal Crash

A woman has been killed after having crashed her SUV into the back of a loaded school bus carrying a school tennis team in McKinney on Thursday night.

According to an article appearing on the DFW CBS Local website, the fatal crash happened at approximately 10:45 p.m. n the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 380 at Wisteria Way, which is located directly in front of McKinney’s Raytheon Plant. Also involved in the crash was a Denton ISD school bus loaded with students from Braswell High School.  The bus had been stopped at a traffic signal when the accident occurred.

A spokesperson for the McKinney Police Department said in a statement that one student on board the school bus had to be taken to the hospital with minor scrapes and bruises. Everyone else on the school bus was evaluated at the scene. It is unknown how many were on the school bus which was returning home after a tennis match.

Police indicated to reporters that several calls had been made to 911 dispatch reporting a woman driving an SUV Jeep erratically along U.S. Highway 380. Later dispatchers got 911 reports of the crash involving an SUV and a school bus.

One woman who had called the accident in to dispatchers suffered a seizure at the scene of the accident. She was transported to an area hospital. There is no further information on her current condition. Police are not sure whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Even though firefighters and emergency crews along with a mechanic for the Denton ISD worked for almost 90 minutes to free the SUV from the rear of the larger school bus, the woman inside was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the victim in the fatal crash has not been released pending notification of family. Investigators are uncertain whether alcohol may have played a role in the accident.

Thankfully for these students and much to the relief of their parents, no one on board the school bus was seriously hurt. Sometimes, however, injuries can manifest in the body days or even weeks after an accident.
