Car and Big Rig Tangle in Fatal Accident

Hurricane Harvey has wrought destruction the likes of which has never before been seen. To add to the tragedy of the storm and its aftermath, two people were killed in an accident Wednesday evening when a car nearly struck a supply truck head on and crashed afterward.

In an article that appeared on Dallas CBS Local.com website, officials say that the fatal accident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. as a car was headed southbound on I-45 at Malloy Bridge Road, south of Wilmer. According to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, the big rig caught fire. The driver of the truck was not seriously injured while the two people in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released pending notification of family members.

Fire and rescue attempted to salvage items from the semi, but it is not known how much could be salvaged from the wreckage of the 18 wheeler.

It may take a significant amount of time before investigators are able to determine the cause of this tragic accident.  Each year thousands of motorists are either critically injured or killed in accidents involving commercial over the road trucks. While many of these may be attributed to driver error, others can be caused by other factors including weather and road conditions. Others who are in smaller vehicles such as passenger cars are at a significant disadvantage in terms of size and weight. Those differences can have tragic results.

If the negligent party is the truck driver, the families of the two people killed in this accident have the legal right to seek compensation for their loss. Such compensation may be used to cover funeral expenses or for wrongful death. Even if no criminal charges result in this case, the driver and the company they work for may still be found liable.
